Ida: 650-867-3141
Rameet: 559-259-1318

Remember, we are focusing on our Dental Station this Winter Break to help supply us with doctors or supplies. I know a lot of us are going to get our wisdom teeth removes or even just a dental check up so talk to your local dentist about this trip and how they can help us with supply donations or even if they want to join us on this trip! Here is the list of materials we need to have this station on our brigade. (*signifies a lot!!!!) We can use as much donations as we can.
  • Gauze* (2x2s & 3x3s)
  • Gloves*
  • Masks    * signifies we need a LOT!!!
  • Paper towels*
  • Drapes
  • Trash bags
  • 3-5 boxes of lidocaine or septocaine cartridges (costs about $20 per box)
  • 3 boxes of 30 GA short needles (blue)
  • 3-4 boxes of 27 GA long needles (yellow)
  • Sharps containers
  • 4 deep plastic trays (for cold sterilization) & supply scrub brush
  • 250 Dixie cups
  • Toothbrushes & toothpaste*
  • Fluoride varnish (optional, but awesome)
  • NOTE: Dentist offices are generally really cool about donating toothpaste and toothbrushes and sometimes even fluoride varnish (if everyone gets 30 toothbrushes & paste donated, you’ll have enough to give every patient a set!).  Hospital supply rooms generally are willing to donate gauze, gloves, masks, sharps containers, plastic strays, supply scrub brushes, and gut-resorbable sutures.
This will also be posted online.
Last thing is remember to fundraise over break and winter break!!!! I have attached a sample letter with a formal letter head that you can edit and send it out to family and friends. This is probably the best way that you can get your trip fundraised fully! There is plenty of time before our trip to send these letters out but since the Holiday season is coming up, this is a great opportunity to let your family know about this trip. SO FUNDRAISE!!!! Let us know if you have any other questions!

Take care and have a great rest of the quarter. Next quarter, we will have our official count of brigaders and we will begin to work hard towards our preparation for the brigades! Stay in contact!

Global Brigades consists of student volunteers and professionals that empower communities in developing countries with programs that improve the quality of life while respecting the local culture.

We have had previous informational sessions earlier this year but we invite those that could not make it and also those who are currently part of the organization to join us and learn about Global Brigades. We have a special guest speaker from GB Headquarters to speak to us about sustainable development, social responsibility, and the many aspects and goals of Global Brigades.

We currently are working on programs that consist of medical/dental relief, international water solutions, public health, and micro-financing.

Please come by at

The Trip

  • There will be time to relax at night and a fiesta will be thrown for us at the end of our trip
  • In regards to the political strife in Honduras:  it should have no affect on our trip.  Most of the political action takes place in the capital, and we will be working in very rural areas.  We also have a security guard who will travel with us to every location.  If something does happen, the organization works closely with the Honduran and US Embassy and will ensure our safety and will determine if we can travel or not.

Fundraisers
  • We’ve had one fundraiser already at Optometry Practice and we raised $400 dollars.  However, we need more ideas for fun fundraisers, so if you have any ideas, please email one of the presidents or fundraising committee
    • Be sure to come out for our fundraisers, because if you don’t, why would anyone else
    • We are trying to set up a Benefit dinner in the Spring to help raise money and everyone's involvement is mandatory. This will be our big event of the year besides our trip.
    • Some ideas already:
      • Jamba Juice
      • Woodstocks Pizza
      • Dance on campus
      • Etc…
    • Please feel free to email any ideas you might have about fundraising
  • Next meeting should be in about 2-3weeks to ensure proper planning.
    • Please come!  We will be receiving CPR training through out the year, and this is the first time meeting with our instructor!
    • Our usual meeting day will be every other Tuesday at 7pm at location TBA. We will post online and email reminders for meetings.

Honduras Update 08/07/2009

My name is Zachary Grambos and I am a 2nd year medical student at Marshall university.  Just last week I led a team of thirteen made up of medical students, undergrads, doctors, nurses, and nursing students to Honduras. Despite the political strife, we remained far removed from any noticeable consequence for the duration of our trip. The Flor Azul compound is 2hours removed from the capital city ad remains remote looking upon a large valley. Every patient that we saw was extremely grateful for our being there and providing them with free healthcare. GMB's top priority is safety and they make sure that while on brigade that we abide by the curfew if one has been in place.  There were police officers with our group. At all times on brigade and plenty of group leaders that can vouch for your good intentions while on brigade.
I hope that your group can continue their brigade because it is such a worthwhile experience that reminds us of why we are going to medical school in the first place.
Thank you.

Zachary Grambos

Honduras Update 07/29/2009

Brigaders are in Honduras participating in medical, dental, water, and public health brigades at this time.  We continue to monitor the situation and have been brigading outside of the El Paraiso region as a precaution.  Communities have been receiving the service they need and we are continuing to move forward with all August brigades.  As always, safety is a number one priority for Global Brigades, please continue to visit the website for updates.
